If you're scant for food in Seattle, you really don't have to be. There are two things you should do. First, apply for Food Stamps through DSHS. Depending on your income they will award you a fixed amount towards food expenses, which you will get monthly. Food stamps today are much easier to get and use than they were in the past- your monthly allowance is added to your EBT card, which you can use at any grocery store for any grocery items you want.
It may take a while for DSHS to determine your eligibility, but don't worry. Learn about the food bank system. The food banks in Seattle are amazing. Each week you can come and pick up all kinds of useful items, that will vary a bit from time to time. You'll get milk, meat, bread, cereal, canned goods, dry food, fresh fruit and vegetables, pies, and an occasional turkey. There is an active food bank in just about every neighborhood, which I'll be adding to the links list here. All the food is donated by local grocery stores at the expiration date, and a lot of good stuff gets put into the system. You don't have to feel guilty at all, any of the fresh food is stuff they have to throw out anyway if people don't pick it up in time. None of the food banks ask for income information when you sign up, they are there to feed you regardless of what your specific economic situation is.
If you're really struggling and want to eat well or take care of your Family, the best thing to do is apply for food stamps -and- use the food bank. You can get a lot of staples that you'd by anyway for free through the food bank, and then use your EBT card to get things you really want.

How to Get Free Gift Cards from your Computer
I do a lot of writing, which sometimes requires a lot of research. Somewhere in the Middle of it I discovered a search service that rewards you with free prizes. You earn points called swag bucks and redeem them for gift certificates to places like amazon, restaurant.com, and target. I just redeemed some of the points I've earned for two $25 gift certificates to restaurant.com, which can be used at many local places to eat out.
If you're just scraping by and would really like to be able to go out now and again without spending any money at all, this is one way to do it. Participating in surveys and polls also help you earn points for prizes and sweepstakes entries, making it easy to earn four or five hundred points a week or more. Try it out yourself here:

How to Get a Car for Free in Seattle!
I actually did this, successfully. I was without a vehicle for a very long time and had some crappy things happen in my life that made it just about impossible to get another car. I found a nation wide charity that helps people who are poor or in difficult situations to get a decent car. You have to be patient, and follow directions. This will not happen overnight- I applied about six months before I got the call, and when it happened I was very surprised that it came through! I now drive a beautiful 2001 Daewoo Lanos, which was awarded to me in Seattle through Free Charity Cars.
If you are in desperate need of a car or know someone that is, you should make an application at Free Charity Cars. You will have to create a profile and interact on their website, making friends and reading the stories of others. You get votes from your friends, and can also help others to get a car by voting for them.
Also, if you have a car that you'd like to donate someplace for a tax write off of the full value, this would be the best charity to do it through. You'll be able to feel confident that it will go to someone who really needs it, and also get a tax break.
You can join whether or not you want to apply as well, just to be able to vote for folks in need. As the recipient of a car from this wonderful charity, I can say they're a very legitimate and helpful charity!

Seattle is a great city!
The economy is screwed up everywhere, and many people across the country are struggling just to get by. Seattle is just as hard hit by the current trends, but has many better resources for assistance than other cities. This blog is meant to point towards useful information on ways to get help in Seattle; whether it's finding a job, getting emergency assistance, or putting food on the table when things are a little lean. Over time, I'll share links and reviews of different services and opportunities, so check back as I put this together. If you know of things you think I should add, please post comments!
Thanks and Welcome!
